A package explosion at a house in Austin, Texas, Monday morning left a 17-year-old male dead and a woman in her 40s injured, according to Austin police. It was the second explosion of the day and the third in the area this month.

An east Austin resident found the package outside and brought it inside. It exploded when it was opened, the CBS affiliate in Austin reported.

Police say the package was not delivered by mail or delivery service, and the explosion is being investigated as a homicide.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said the explosion seems “very similar” to another one that killed 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House in his home in northeast Austin on March 2. That incident is now being investigated as a homicide as well.

Manley has also not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime, considering both homes in which the packages were detonated were owned by African-Americans.

Minutes after Manley concluded a news conference linking the two explosions, another was reported just southeast of downtown Austin, Fox News reported.

This time a woman in her late 70s received life-threatening injuries. The other woman present, who is in her 80s, is being treated for “unrelated medical issues.”
