Four Democratic senators walked out of a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Friday where they are scheduled to vote on confirming Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Conn.; Mazie Hirono, Hawaii; Kamala Harris, Calif.; and Sheldon Whitehouse, R.I.; left the hearing room as Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, read his opening statement.
“Moments ago I walked out of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Kavanaugh. This hearing is a sham and Dr. Ford and the American people deserve better,” Harris tweeted shortly after exiting the room.

“Yesterday, we heard testimony from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Kavanaugh, regarding sexual assault allegations that dates back to when the two were in high school. It was difficult and emotional for both of them. At the end of the day, the three witnesses Dr. Ford named denied any knowledge of the event she described. Judge Kavanaugh forcefully denied the allegations. The alleged behavior is inconsistent with everything else we know about him,” Grassley said at the start of his opening statement.
Grassley described Kavanaugh’s record of “being at the forefront of women’s advancement” in the legal field and reminded listeners that Ford had the burden of proof about the allegations.
As Grassley said that he did not feel she met that burden of proof, the four senators got up from their seats and left the hearing room.
The scene prompted photographers to leave their seats and head toward the door where the senators were leaving.
“You folks that are photographers know that you are supposed to sit down? Maybe you just ought to leave the room if you don’t know what the rules are,” Grassley said.
