Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe predicted in a previously unpublished interview, conducted before he was fired late Friday, that he would be a “significant witness” in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Speaking to Politico earlier this month, McCabe said he “firmly” believed that there was an “ongoing effort to undermine my credibility because of the work that I did on the Russia case, because of the investigations that I oversaw and impacted that target this administration.”

With Mueller reportedly looking into whether Trump obstructed justice, McCabe claimed he might play a role.

“They have every reason to believe that I could end up being a significant witness in whatever the special counsel comes up with, and so they are trying to create this counter-narrative that I am not someone who can be believed or trusted,” McCabe said. “And as someone who has been believed and trusted by really good people for 21 years, it’s just infuriating to me.”

In his statement responding to his termination late Friday, McCabe said the “attack” on his credibility was also part of the Trump administration’s “ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation.”

After McCabe gave private testimony to the House Intelligence Committee in December, reports, which relied on leaks, indicated McCabe said he could corroborate Comey’s description of conversations he had with Trump before he was fired in May of last year.

It was in the aftermath of Comey’s ouster, after he said Trump asked him to lay off the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn and asked him for loyalty, that the Washington Post reported Mueller had expanded his investigation to look at possible obstruction of justice.

McCabe later claimed that following the leaks of his testimony, the Justice Department inspector general report on the Clinton probe was sped up, ultimately leading to his firing. He told Politico that the accelerated IG probe was a “striking coincidence.”

Trump also singled him out on Twitter in late December, calling attention to McCabe’s planned retirement, saying McCabe “is racing the clock to retire with full benefits.”
