Asylum seekers demanding $50,000 a pop are not asylum seekers

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Gustavo Solis has an excellent article on the new scheme by which a group of migrants in Tijuana are attempting to enter the U.S. They are offering America a choice, but it’s not a good choice for the U.S.

Led by one Alfonso Guerrero Ulloa, these 100 individuals went to the U.S. consulate in Tijuana on Tuesday with a letter demanding “that the Trump Administration pay them $50,000 each or allow them into the U.S.” This is justified, Ulloa says, because “it is a small sum compared to everything the United States has stolen from Honduras.” Solis reports the “letter criticized American intervention in Central America. They gave the U.S. Consulate 72 hours to respond.”

This is an opportunity for U.S. customs officials, just not in the way that the petitioners intend. Put simply, any individual whose asylum request can be offset by a $50,000 payment is someone who doesn’t need asylum at all.

Asylum under U.S. and international law is a legal recourse for those in immediate need of escape from their home nation. It is for victims of war, natural disaster, and political oppression. It is most certainly not for those who are fleeing for their lives but can stop doing so for the low price of $50,000.

What of Ulloa personally? Well, Solis says that Ulloa has had to live outside of his native Honduras for many years because “he was falsely accused of attacking a Chinese restaurant in Honduras in 1987.” Whatever the exact circumstances, displeased customer or violent xenophobia, he’s not exactly a prime candidate for U.S. entry.

What exactly did the US steal from Honduras? If anything, this county has been more than generous in foreign aid to Honduras — aid which evidently has either been squandered or stolen if the country is in such a deplorable condition.

We’ve known for some time many of these peoples are criminals and freeloaders. I guess we can add “extortionists” to the description.
