The top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said expectations North Korean leader Kim Jong Un can be charmed out of giving up nuclear weapons is “not realistic.”
Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday it is unrealistic to think North Korea will “willy nilly” commit to denuclearization.
“He views having deliverable nuclear weapons as his ticket to dying as an old man in his bed,” Corker said of Kim. “He saw what happened with [Libyan President Moammar] Gadhafi. Gadhafi’s a dead man now because he gave up his nuclear weapons.”
“To think that somebody’s going to go in and charm him out of that is not realistic,” Corker continued. “Is there some progress that can be made? I hope so. But, you know, that’s a big hurdle.”
Kim announced last week he would suspend nuclear and missile tests as of Saturday. The leader of the rogue regime also said he is shutting down one of the North’s test sites.
