Former Trump lawyer, Chicago alderman charged with attempted extortion

Chicago Ald. Ed Burke (D), whose law firm formerly worked for the Trump Organization in the city, was charged with attempted extortion Thursday for reportedly attempting to use his city council position to solicit business to the firm.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Burke allegedly tried to persuade a fast food company to become a client of his firm after the company sought Burke’s support for a remodeling project in the city. Evidence against the 50-year veteran of the Chicago city council include wiretapped cell phone conversations, according to the newspaper.

His firm, Klafter and Burke, worked for President Trump for years in Chicago, where the firm performed property tax appeal work that the Sun-Times reported last year saved the Trump Organization more than $14 million in taxes over a decade.
