A CAR bomb in Kabul has killed at least 80 people and injured more than 350 near a number of foreign embassies in the Afghanistan capital.

The blast went off during rush hour at the gate of the German Embassy, which backs onto the British Embassy.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said the embassy was the target as he called the attack “contemptible”.

Sources in Kabul said the vehicle may have been a water tanker laden with explosives.

The explosion could be felt kilometres away.

The Taliban has denied responsibility

Foreign embassies in the capital are situated close to one another and initial reports suggest the blast came from that direction.

Many media outlets are also situated in the area.

The Australian embassy is on lockdown, it was confirmed.

Buildings belonging to the Indian Embassy have also been damaged.

The German Embassy is surrounded by the British, Canadian, Pakistani, Indian and Indonesian embassies.
