Liberty University Thursday offered support for an employee reportedly paid by Michael Cohen on behalf of Donald Trump to rig polls to favor him ahead of his campaign for president.

“Liberty University, like many other educational institutions, has permitted its employees for many years to engage in business, consulting and other side work that does not interfere with their employment obligations to the University,” the institution in Virginia said in a statement Thursday.

“John Gauger is one example among many outstanding LU employees who have made great contributions in their official roles and also enjoyed success as independent entrepreneurs,” the statement said.

Gauger, who owns the small tech company he claims was hired to rig polls in Trump’s favor, works as chief information officer at LU. President of Liberty, Jerry Falwell Jr., is an evangelical Trump supporter.
