Marriott International is alerting 500 million guests whose personal data, including credit card numbers, may have been stolen in a hack of the reservation system at Starwood Hotels, the luxury chain it took over two years ago.

The cyberattack is among the largest so far, affecting more people than the entire population of the United States and dwarfing even the theft discovered last year at credit bureau Equifax, which sparked congressional scrutiny and the departure of then-CEO Richard Smith.

The Bethesda, Md.-based hotelier was alerted of a cyber-intrusion into the Starwood reservation database on Sept. 8, then discovered that unauthorized access had been occurring since at least 2014, officials said in a statement on Friday. Information that was accessed also included names, phone numbers, email addresses, and passport data.

“We deeply regret this incident happened,” said Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson. “We fell short of what our guests deserve and what we expect of ourselves. We are doing everything we can to support our guests, and using lessons learned to be better moving forward.”

Marriott fell 5.1 percent to $115.60 in New York trading on Friday.
