Several news outlets deleted glamorous photos of the Trump family after being told that first lady Melania Trump earned up to $1 million in royalties last year as part of an unconventional licensing agreement.

Yahoo Lifestyle, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Houston Chronicle, and the San Antonio Express-News deleted images from their websites after being contacted by NBC News, which published an article Monday on the photos.

Melania Trump earned between $100,000 and $1,000,000 in 2017 from Getty Images royalties, according to a May financial disclosure form. The income was described only as “use of photographic images” and neither party has clarified the precise income.

The photos that generated royalties are part of a 187-image series staged by Belgian photographer Regine Mahaux between 2010 and 2016, NBC News reported.

Yahoo denied knowledge of the royalty distribution, telling NBC News: “We were not aware of this specific arrangement with Getty nor was our editorial influenced by it. We have removed the image from Yahoo Lifestyle.”

The three newspapers that removed the photos are owned by Hearst Communications Inc. and dropped the photos without responding to inquires from NBC.

Getty’s catalog specifies the images only could be used in “positive stories only” and product descriptions say users of the photo agency’s website “will not be able to price or download image without prior negotiation,” unlike other images, which can be downloaded for a fixed price.
