Just before he left office, President Obama authorized a plan to seed Russia’s cyber infrastructure with “cyber weapons” in retaliation for Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.

The Washington Post on Friday reported in depth on Obama’s decision on Oct. 7 to tell the American public that Russia was behind the hacking into Democratic emails.

In December, Obama decided to retaliate in public by expelling 35 Russian diplomats, and closing two Russian compounds in the U.S.

The Post said he also took a covert action against Russia that has yet to be reported:

“Obama also approved a previously undisclosed covert measure that authorized planting cyber weapons in Russia’s infrastructure, the digital equivalent of bombs that could be detonated if the United States found itself in an escalating exchange with Moscow,” the Post reported.

But the Post said it was only a plan, and that it would be up to the Trump administration to follow through with the idea.
