The Russian Foreign Ministry advised Americans on Tuesday to avoid reading U.S. newspapers following a Washington Post report that President Trump had disclosed highly classified intelligence to Russian officials during a meeting at the White House.

“Guys, have you been reading American newspapers again?” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page. “You shouldn’t read them.”

“You can put them to various uses, but you shouldn’t read them,” she continued. “Lately it’s become not only harmful, but dangerous too.”

Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday to defend revealing classified information during the meeting with Russian officials, arguing he has an “absolute right” to do so.

Trump wrote he shared the information with the Russians for “humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism.”

He also said he wanted to provide Russia with “facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety.”

Trump also expressed frustration at the content of a private meeting with foreign officials being leaked to the press, as they have numerous times since taking office.
