Steve Deace's Movie Review: Rogue One

My review of Rogue One, which is the best Star Wars movie since before it was “morning in America” again 33 years ago. Yes, it’s even superior to The Force Awakens, which was a somewhat flawed but still worthy reboot of the franchise after Lucas’ much-panned prequels.

The story starts off a little slow while the characters are introduced, but the pace builds from the first 30 minutes on. Reaching a crescendo with one of the best finales ever seen in a Star Wars movie. Along the way some very clever cameos from the original trilogy I won’t spoil, and an absolute jaw-dropping scene from Darth Vader himself. A scene worthy of repeated replays on its own. There’s also a neat subplot about faith lost and regained with some definite spiritual themes you’ll recognize.

This is the movie the Lucas prequels should’ve been, as it even neatly ties itself into the original series without contriving anything. I’d rank it one of the best films I’ve seen so far this year.
