Steve Deace's Movie Review: Star Trek Beyond

Saw Star Trek Beyond.

I’m a pretty big Star Trek fan, its progressive bent aside, and absolutely loved the J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot. However, as someone who ranks Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan as one of his all-time faves, I thought it was too early to pay homage to it with the new cast in Star Trek: Into Darkness.

This new one was promised to finally take the rebooted franchise to its space exploration roots. Except most of it takes place on a planet and a space station that is a mini-earth. There’s very little space exploration in the film. And really, aside from the fantastic chemistry the new cast has, the story is pretty much “meh.”

I won’t spoil it for now, but let’s just say I was disappointed in the been there, done that villain. The overall story is pretty bland, though the action points are well done.

Overall, it was just okay. If you like Star Trek you’ll like this, but it doesn’t blaze any new ground.
