‘Texas doesn’t need to listen to their garbage,’ says Ted Cruz of canceled Texas A&M rally

On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz spoke on North Texas radio’s “The Mark Davis Show” and gave his reaction to Charlottesville, Virginia, and the canceled White Lives Matter rally at Texas A&M.

“I’m glad that Spencer and the white supremacists are not coming to A&M,” Cruz said, referring to alt-right leader and white nationalist Richard Spencer. “I think Texas doesn’t need to listen to their garbage.”

The Texas senator also criticized the white supremacist and neo-Nazis seen protesting in Charlottesville over the weekend.

“We shouldn’t be seeing this in America,” said Cruz. “These guys are racist, bigoted thugs. They’re idiots. What they’re saying is wrong, they’re lies.”

Despite the harsh words for both white nationalist rallies, Cruz was adamant throughout the short phone interview that the controversial protesters had a right to speak.

“Even those profoundly wrong have a right to speak and express their views, but they have to express it peacefully,” Cruz said. “They don’t have a right to violence, they don’t have a right to murder, they don’t have a right to assault others.”

“When people do choose to use their free speech rights to advocate hatred and evil, the rest of us are obliged to counter it,” Cruz added.
