Three people died and seven were seriously injured following a vehicle chase with U.S. Border Patrol agents that ended in a crash south of San Diego, Calif., Thursday afternoon, according to Customs and Border Protection.

Border officials said Friday a U.S. citizen who was arrested at the scene of the crash was suspected of smuggling the 10 passengers over the U.S.-Mexico border.

The seven people wounded in the crash were confirmed to be Mexican citizens, CBP spokesman Ralph DeSio told the Washington Examiner. DeSio could not share the nationalities of the three deceased.

Around 4 p.m. PST Thursday, Border Patrol agents making rounds near the international boundary noticed tire tracks from multiple vehicles.

Customs and Border Protection said in a news release tracks are “typical signs of a drive-through smuggling event.”

The tracks indicated the vehicles had gone north. Agents also found a piece of a pick-up truck that had apparently fallen off the vehicle.

About 10 minutes later, agents nearby spotted a pick-up truck that was missing a part of its exterior that matched the part agents had found near the tracks.

Border Patrol moved in on the truck, but the driver did not pull over. Instead, the truck fled and pulled onto an interstate highway. The driver led federal law enforcement agents on a chase, first heading east then exiting the highway and re-entering going west.

The driver lost control and the truck went off into an embankment after agents deployed a tire deflation device. The truck rolled over and passengers were thrown.
