An Israeli private intelligence agency was hired by aides to President Trump in an attempt to find damaging information on Obama administration officials who were key in negotiating the Iran deal, according to a report Saturday.
Set in their sights were former deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes and Colin Kahl, who was a national security adviser to former Vice President Joe Biden. Their mission was to discredit the 2015 agreement that put Iran’s nuclear program on ice in exchange for relief from crippling sanctions.
According to the Observer, officials who were tied to Trump’s team reached out to the intelligence agency after Trump visited Tel Aviv in May of last year during his first foreign tour as president.
“The idea was that people acting for Trump would discredit those who were pivotal in selling the deal, making it easier to pull out of it,” one source told the news outlet.
Though there was a plan of action, the report says it is unclear just how far the operation got, including any “dirt” that was dug up on Rhodes and Kahl.
