President Trump on Sunday said he is removing Defense Secretary James Mattis from his job on Jan. 1, two months before his planned departure.
The abrupt decision comes as Trump’s anger has boiled over Mattis’s resignation letter, which was widely seen as a rebuke of the president’s foreign policy.
“I am pleased to announce that our very talented Deputy Secretary of Defense, Patrick Shanahan, will assume the title of Acting Secretary of Defense starting January 1, 2019. Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing,” he said.
“He will be great!”
