Trump hammers 'Criminal Deep State' over FBI informant

Reports that a federal informant contacted President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign mark a turning point for the so-called “deep state,” Trump claimed Wednesday morning, celebrating the criticism the Justice Department has come under in recent days.

“Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State,” the president wrote on Twitter. “They go after Phony Collusion with Russia, a made up Scam, and end up getting caught in a major SPY scandal the likes of which this country may never have seen before! What goes around, comes around!”

Trump has grown increasingly vocal in recent days regarding the news reports that the FBI’s investigation into Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 election utilized an informant who somehow contacted the Trump campaign. The president and his allies have characterized this as the Justice Department inserting a spy into the Trump campaign, a move that Trump has said could dwarf any past political scandal.

“SPYGATE could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!” Trump wrote on Twitter Wednesday. He lashed out in a subsequent post against former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who appeared on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday, where he suggested that the FBI’s activities had been focused on Russia’s election interference efforts, not the Trump campaign itself. Asked by panelist Joy Behar if Trump should be happy that the bureau was probing the Kremlin’s interference campaign, Clapper said “he should be.”

“’Trump should be happy that the FBI was SPYING on his campaign.’ No, James Clapper, I am not happy,” Trump wrote on Twitter, attributing a quote to the former director of national intelligence that he does not appear to have said. “Spying on a campaign would be illegal, and a scandal to boot!”
