Trump takes credit for Gulf countries cutting diplomatic ties with Qatar

President Trump took credit for the decision of five Arab nations to suspend diplomatic relations with Qatar, a country some of its neighbors accuse of supporting Islamist terrorism and Iran.

In a series of Tuesday morning Tweets, Trump said his recent trip to Saudi Arabia, where he addressed dozens of leaders from Arab and Muslim-majority countries about combating extremism, had inspired some of these nations to isolate Qatar.

Trump suggested the decision by five countries — Saudi Arabi, Egypt, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Yemen — to cut off Qatar could portend “the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!”

While Trump cheered this action, an aggressive move to punish Qatar could put the U.S. in a delicate position.

Qatar, a small but energy-rich country, hosts an American air base — the foreign headquarters of U.S. Central Command — and is helping the Saudis fight Iranian-linked Houthi rebels in Yemen’s civil war.

During his May 21 speech in Saudi Arabia, Trump called Qatar a “crucial strategic partner.”
