9 House Republicans joined with Democrats to hold Steve Bannon in criminal contempt of Congress.

The vote passed 229 to 202.

What happened: Nine House Republicans voted Thursday to hold Steve Bannon, major ally of Donald Trump, in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena in a House committee’s Jan. 6 investigation.

The Republican ayes: Peter Meijer (Mich.), Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Liz Cheney (Wyo.), Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio), Fred Upton (Mich.), Jaime Herrera Beutler (Wash.), John Katko (N.Y.) and Nancy Mace (S.C.).

Seven of those members voted to impeach President Donald Trump following the insurrection — except Mace and Fitzpatrick. Rep. Greg Pence (R-Ind.), the brother of former Vice President Mike Pence, did not vote.

“I’m going to fight for subpoena powers that no matter who’s in power because we’ve got to have the opportunity and the ability to investigate.”

— Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.)

Cheney, the top Republican on the Jan. 6 select committee, said in an interview the vote “reflects the fact this should not be a partisan issue. That people recognize what happened on January 6 can’t go uninvestigated, and that when Congress issues a subpoena, you can’t simply fail to comply with it.” The committee unanimously voted earlier this week to move forward with a contempt resolution after Bannon refused to cooperate with the panel’s subpoena seeking documents and testimony.
