A massive winter storm is expected to strike the central Rockies and High Plains this weekend, potentially bringing multiple feet of snow that could halt travel and cause power outages in the regions, according to the National Weather Service

The major storm system will bring heavy snow to Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as Cheyenne, Wyo., and parts of western Nebraska. Denver could see anywhere from 18 to 24 inches, Boulder 24 to 30 inches and Cheyenne could record up to 30 inches or more.

“The snowfall totals currently forecast are absolutely historic,” the National Weather Service in Cheyenne said Thursday morning.

Millions of people in the area are under winter storm watches that are likely to turn into winter storm or blizzard warnings as the storm advances Friday. The heaviest snowfall is expected late Friday night through Saturday and Sunday before tapering off Sunday night and early Monday.
