Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said Wednesday that it has become unclear where the Republican Party stands on a number of policy issues.

“I don’t know what the Republican Party is right now, in general,” Sasse said during the Washington Examiner‘s “Examining Trade” event.

Sasse, chairman of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on National Security and International Trade and Finance, was responding to a question about whether the Republican Party is still a pro-free trade party.

“That’s not a specific attack on anything from the last 15 or 18 months,” he clarified.

Sasse added that it’s difficult to articulate the Republican vision for trade at the moment, due in part to the Trump administration’s unclear goals, especially in regard to China.
