Top Democrats from the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees are pressing for information from Cambridge Analytica, a data firm recently embroiled in a online security controversy amid reporting that indicates it may have violated U.S. regulations limiting foreign participation in elections.

The report, published by the Washington Post on Sunday, cited three former employees of the data firm who claimed that Cambridge Analytica in 2014 designated multiple non-U.S. citizens to work on campaign strategy and messaging advice with Republican candidates — a move that could be a breach of U.S. election laws.

The firm had worked for President Trump’s campaign, among other Republican campaigns.

“If true, these activities appear to violate a Federal Election Commission regulation that prohibits the participation of foreign nationals in ‘decisions involving election-related activities,’” Reps. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote Tuesday in a letter sent to Alexander Taylor, acting chief executive officer of Cambridge Analytica.

As a result, Nadler and Cummings requested all documents and communications related to the work of foreign nationals in any U.S. election, between Jan. 2014 to the present. Being scrutinized is the firm’s work for the campaign of Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., the 2016 presidential campaign of Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Trump’s campaign, and the John Bolton Super PAC.
