The U.S. Capitol Police’s new chief said his officers “cannot afford to be complacent” as risks for lawmakers are at an all-time high.

Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger, who was sworn into his role in July, told The Associated Press that threats against lawmakers have increased in droves, with thousands more incidents reported compared to a few years ago.

“We have never had the level of threats against members of Congress that we’re seeing today,” Manger told the AP. “Clearly, we’ve got a bigger job in terms of the protection aspect of our responsibilities, we’ve got a bigger job than we used to.”

Manger said that his officers responded to more than 4,100 reports of threats against members of Congress in the first three months of 2021, and he predicted there would be about 9,000 threats by the end of 2021, the AP said.
