Cruz slams Trump’s ‘PC’ stance on transgender public bathrooms

FREDERICK, Md. — Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz on Thursday said front-runner Donald Trump had defied “common sense” and embraced political correctness by coming out against North Carolina’s law barring people from using public restrooms of the opposite sex.

“He said he thought men should be able to go into the girls bathroom if they want,” scoffed Mr. Cruz, a U.S. senator from Texas. “Let me ask you, have we going stark raving mad? This is political correctness. This is nonsense.”

He said that he was waiting for Mr. Trump to put “Make America PC Again” on a baseball cap, referring to the red caps emblazoned with the Trump campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.”

The jab for going “PC” was especially stinging to the front-runner because Mr. Trump has prided himself and gained a fierce following for defying political correctness.

Mr. Cruz, who is running as a “true conservative” alternative to Mr. Trump, said that transgender bathroom issue showed how the billionaire businessman as president would deal with Democrats and compromise away American freedoms.

Mr. Cruz asked if anyone in the audience of about 1,000 people had daughters.

“Here is basic common sense: Grown adult men, strangers should not be alone in bathrooms with little girls,” said Mr. Cruz.
