Earlier this evening, after a crushing loss in the Indiana primary, Ted Cruz suspended his presidential campaign.   The polls were right, Trump has solidified his support in the Republican party, and Cruz recognized this in his speech.

The speech was a recitation of the values that Cruz has been talking about on this campaign.   Cruz then said that he had promised to stay in the campaign as long as he had a path to the nomination.  He then added, “that path has been foreclosed.”  Cruz added, “with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.”

Cruz’s assessment of the the path forward is correct. Trump’s delegate haul today puts him somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,050 delegates, depending on how you count the unbound delegates from Pennsylvania.  Trump needs approximately 187 of the remaining 445 delegates to secure the nomination on the first ballot.    It is widely expected that Trump will win the winner-take-all state of New Jersey and its 51 bound delegates. This means Trump would need only win 136 of the 394 non-New Jersey delegates.  The path had closed.

Thank you very much, Senator Cruz and your team, for all you have been doing for this country with impeccable character.

May God comfort you and guide you to glorify him as always!
