Democracy mattered most to 35 percent of respondents to the National Election Pool exit poll, according to NBC News. The economy was right behind at 31 percent of voters, followed by abortion with 14 percent, immigration with 11 percent and foreign policy with a paltry 4 percent.

That poll found that 39 percent of voters said the economy was the most important issue facing the U.S., followed by immigration at 20 percent and abortion at 11 percent.

Still, nearly half of respondents to that poll identified democracy as the most important factor in their decision to vote.
