Lee Kiefer made history on Sunday as the first American athlete to win gold in the individual foil at the Olympics.
Kiefer, who previously competed in the 2012 London Games and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, beat Russian opponent and defending champion Inna Deriglazova 15-13, according to The Washington Post and WLWT.
After she beat Deriglazova, she took off her mask and celebrated.
The University of Kentucky, where Kiefer attends medical school, celebrated her win and that of Will Shaner, who won gold in the men’s air rifle 10m. Shaner is a junior at the university and competes on their rifle team.
