Flying cars coming in five years, says Intel's drone developer

The official overseeing drone development for tech company Intel expects flying cars will be up and running in the U.S. in the next five years.

“There will definitely be flights with flying cars in five years. At scale? Probably not. But definitely you’ll see them starting to be up in the sky. The most amazing thing about autonomous air traffic is that airspace solves the three-dimensional challenge that the ground traffic is faced with,” Anil Nanduri, general manager for Intel’s drone group, told CNET.

Industry experts say the Federal Aviation Administration will approve these type of vehicles by 2024.

Uber is pushing to be among the first companies in America to launch air taxis, ideally in 2023. Intel is working on the microprocessors used inside the car-like drones, and Nanduri is tasked with ensuring flying cars can avoid flying into each other.

He said the implementation of wireless fiber technology will dramatically increase bandwidth, and because it is inexpensive, it will not hit tech companies looking to take advantage of airspace to do business.
