A joint fundraising committee run by Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz paid John Eastman’s law firm at least $25,000 within the last seven months.

Eastman is a central figure in the 2020 election subversion saga.

What happened: Put America First, a joint fundraising committee run by Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), paid at least $25,000 for legal services since September to the Constitutional Counsel Group. That’s the law firm of John Eastman, a onetime legal adviser to former President Donald Trump.

The nature of these payments: It’s unclear what Eastman’s firm is doing for the lawmakers. The committee reported at least three separate payments to the firm — one that amounted to $10,000 on Sept. 13, 2021, a $5,277.08 payment on Dec. 15, 2021, and another $10,000 payment on Jan. 14 of this year.

Scandal on scandal: Both Greene and Gaetz are facing their own legal difficulties. Greene is suing Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to prevent the state from considering a challenge to her eligibility to seek reelection. Voters in her district allege she’s disqualified under the Constitution because of her support for efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Gaetz, on the other hand, has been linked to a criminal sex trafficking probe that’s already ensnared several allies. It’s unclear whether lawyers from Eastman’s group are advising either Greene or Gaetz on those matters.

……..

Some background: Eastman is a central player in Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 loss. As the then-president’s former legal adviser, Eastman spent the last weeks of the Trump presidency enforcing a strategy to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 election — an effort that was characterized as a potential crime by a federal judge last month.

More than a year into Biden’s presidency, Eastman’s efforts haven’t stopped. As recently as last month, he was recorded urging the Republican-controlled Wisconsin legislature to overturn the 2020 election results during a meeting at the state Capitol, according to footage obtained by progressive journalist Lauren Windsor.
