Former President George H.W. Bush was hospitalized in an intensive care unit on Sunday, one day after his late wife Barbara Bush’s funeral.

“President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood,” Bush’s office said in a statement on Monday. “He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering.”

CNN reported Bush was suffering from an infection which led to sepsis, which can be life-threatening.

The news comes days after Bush and his family attended the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush, who passed away last week at the age of 92 after she decided to seek comfort care instead of medical treatment.

George H.W. Bush’s spokesman said Wednesday that the former president was transferred to a regular patient room in the hospital after he spent multiple days in the intensive care unit for a blood infection.

“President George H.W. Bush has been moved from the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital to a regular patient room and is expected to continue his recovery there for several more days,” spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement. “He is alert and talking with hospital staff, family, and friends, and his doctors are very pleased with his progress.”
