Josh Hawley says he would have voted against a resolution honoring Capitol workers for their service during the Jan. 6 attack.

Hawley objected to the measure’s referencing of “violent insurrectionists.”

What happened: Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) said he would have opposed a resolution thanking Capitol personnel, including custodial and food preparation staff, for their work during the Jan. 6 insurrection and throughout the pandemic. In a statement included in the Congressional Record, Hawley said the bill was written to “score cheap partisan political points,” objecting in particular to the use of the phrase “violent insurrectionists.”

“Not a single person from that day has been charged with the crime of insurrection. If we are going to honor Capitol Hill workers — and we should — we must do so in a manner that focuses on their service to their nation, not on false narratives that are meant to divide us.”

— Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)

What timing … This statement came the same day federal prosecutors charged the leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia and 10 others with seditious conspiracy, an extremely rare charge, for their roles in the riot. The indictment stated the conspiracy aimed to “oppose the lawful transfer of presidential power by force.” More on those charges here.

Fact check: Seditious conspiracy actually carries a far steeper sentence than formal insurrection charges under federal law. So maybe the resolution’s language should have modified to “violent seditionists?”
