Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam issued an apology Sunday amid calls for her to step down over a bill that would allow extradition of residents to the Chinese mainland, according to Reuters.

Lam apologized Sunday for the government’s handling of the controversial bill, which has drawn hundreds of thousands of protesters in recent weeks.

Last week, she suspended the bill, but stopped short of pulling it outright.

Lam gave no indication of how it would be handled, according to Reuters.

She acknowledged the demonstrations and said the island’s government “understands that these views have been made out of love and care for Hong Kong,” according to The Associated Press.

“The chief executive apologizes to the people of Hong Kong for this and pledges to adopt a most sincere and humble attitude to accept criticisms and make improvements in serving the public,” she added, according to the AP.

Despite the suspension and her apology, demonstrations continued on Sunday with protesters calling for her resignation.

“This is a total insult to and fooling the people who took to the street!” the Civil Human Rights Front said in a statement.
