The school initially planned on having students return to campus for the upcoming semester.

Johns Hopkins University became the latest school to announce that it will be conducting classes for the upcoming fall semester virtually, one of the many institutions of higher education to forgo in-person learning as the coronavirus pandemic rages.

This follows the spring 2020 semester that was moved online during the onset of the virus.

The Washington Post reports that school officials urged students not to return to its Baltimore campus, a change from the original plans that would have allowed them to return. The announcement was made on Thursday evening, with the school’s president, Ronald J. Daniels, as well as several university leaders, expressing “a profound sense of regret and intense disappointment.”

Growing new infections in Baltimore ultimately confirmed Hopkins’ leadership’s decision to hold classes virtually, writing that the number of new coronavirus infections in Baltimore has moved to 28 per 100,000 from 10 per 100,000. As with many other states, young adults between the ages of 20-39 are reporting being infected more frequently.
