The state saw a sharp uptick in positive test results on Sunday.
Data from Sunday confirms that Kentucky has reached a new daily record for new coronavirus cases, following trends experienced by other states struggling with outbreaks of COVID-19.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that 979 new cases were reported on July 19. Gov. Andy Beshear (D) confirmed these findings in a press statement, reportedly calling them “a wake-up call”.
“I have faith and I have trust in the people of Kentucky,” Beshear said in a news release. “But today and in the days ahead we’ve got to do a whole lot better. We’re going to have to take some more action.”
The Kentucky government reports 23,161 confirmed cases statewide, along with 670 fatalities. The Lexington-Herald Leader notes that on Sundays the state processes a limited amount of test batches.
