A vast majority of Americans say social distancing guidelines advocated by President Trump’s coronavirus task force are working, according to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released exclusively to The Hill.

Eighty percent of respondents said the guidelines pushed by the White House task force are working, while 20 percent said they did not think the measures have been successful.

The poll comes amid a debate about how soon to start reopening parts of the economy.

The White House issued social distancing guidelines in mid-March, recommending that gatherings of more than 10 people be avoided and that individuals stay at least six feet away from others. Earlier this month, the Trump administration also recommended that individuals wear face masks when out in public.

Additionally, states have issued stay-at-home orders, in which non-essential businesses and schools have closed to the public.

“I think we are seeing broad acceptance of the government shutdown policies,” said Harvard CAPS/Harris polling director Mark Penn. “Work at home is the new normal and people are adjusting to it in industries where it is possible.”

Seventy-eight percent of respondents said they were working or studying from home, while 22 percent said they were not.
