Residents of Guadalajara, Mexico, woke up to three feet of ice Sunday after a freak hailstorm in the middle of a hot summer.

Enrique Alfaro Ramirez, the governor of Jalisco, of which Guadalajara is the capital, said he’d never witnessed scenes like those he saw Sunday morning.

“In coordination with the Mexican military and municipal authorities from Guadalajara y Tlaquepaque, the government of Jalisco is working on cleaning and removing hail from public roads,” Ramirez tweeted.

The city is nearly 5,000 feet above sea level and usually maintains a temperate climate, although severe weather is not unheard of during the summer.
