The total number of deaths from the coronavirus in Mexico has topped 300,000, according to the latest figures tallied by government officials.

Over the weekend, government officials published a new report showing an additional 294,287 deaths in the country were linked to COVID-19 since last year, the Associated Press reported. Since Feb. 15 of this year, there have been an additional 26,772 deaths among people who have gotten tested.

Mexico does little testing, the AP reported, and many Mexicans are believed to have died at home from coronavirus without ever receiving a diagnosis.

The new numbers published over the weekend would place Mexico second in the world behind the U.S. in most nationwide deaths from coronavirus.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took a two-week leave of absence from his duties last month after catching the virus, vowing not to wear a mask or mandate other citizens do the same.

“There is no authoritarianism in Mexico … everything is voluntary, liberty is the most important thing,” López Obrador said. “It is each person’s own decision.”
