Then-candidate Donald Trump knew what he was doing was wrong when he directed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make hush-money payments to women during the 2016 election, Cohen said Friday.
“He was trying to hide what you were doing, correct?” ABC’s George Stephanopoulos asked Cohen in his first televised interview since his sentencing.
“Correct,” Cohen said.
“And he knew it was wrong?”
“Of course.”

Trump has said he was taking legal advice from his lawyer when the payments were made, and assumed they were legal because Cohen agreed to do it. But Cohen said Trump directed everything, and was worried news of his affairs would hurt him in the election.
“He was very concerned with how this would affect the election,” Cohen said, adding that he directed the payments to help himself personally and the presidential campaign.
