More than 1M without power in Florida

More than 1 million customers in Florida are without power as Hurricane Irma bares down on the state, according to utility officials.

As of Sunday morning, nearly 1.1 million customers across Florida did not have power, Florida Power & Light Company said, according to The Associated Press.

In Miami-Dade County, there were about 574,000 outages, according to the AP. More than 300,000 outages were reported in Broward County and 136,000 in Palm Beach County.

Irma made landfall in the Florida Keys early Sunday morning as a Category 4 storm.

The storm slammed into Cudjoe Key at about 9 a.m. with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph after gaining strength in the Atlantic overnight, according to the National Hurricane Center.
