More than 120 visitors to Nevada contracted the coronavirus, with some pointing to casinos as the culprit.

At least 123 visitors to Nevada have tested positive for the coronavirus in the weeks following their trip and returning home, USA Today reports. This comes after casinos in the state reopened on June 4, with state Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) aiming to rejuvenate the economy by welcoming tourists back to Las Vegas.

In light of the rising case count, with almost 1,000 new cases added on Monday bringing the state total to 43,831 total infection, Sisolak reimposed bar closures last week in county hotspots and added capacity restrictions for other restaurants and public spaces. Regarding casinos, however, the governor reportedly said he would wait for information before closing them or restricting admittance.

Another big surprise that we didn’t see coming.

The problem tourist attraction cities have with casinos is that a large number of their customers come from out of town or state. There is a casino across town from me that is open and so far, it doesn’t look like it’s been a hot spot for COVID infection. But this casino attracts mostly locals; this region is not a haven for tourists. Plus, the local casino is a small operation. which I think does a better job of enforcing the mask policy, maintaining social distancing and limiting capacity. This casino is also not open 24/7/365, so it has time to keep the place clean and disinfected.

I jut think mammoth operations such as in Vegas or Atlantic City are just not going to be as safe as the smaller gambling operations in rural areas and small towns like mine. I understand that in these big meccas, gaming is the major tourist attraction and economy driver, but until and unless the operators can make them safer, the casinos should be closed.
