More than half of Florida students required to wear masks despite governor’s ban on mandates

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) issued an executive order banning mask mandates in schools in July.

Despite Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order banning mask mandates in schools and leaving the decision up to parents, more than half of Florida’s students are required to wear masks in schools, according to an analysis by The Washington Post.

By Wednesday, 10 Florida counties had passed their own mask mandates requiring a doctor’s note for students to opt out: Alachua, Broward, Duval, Hillsborough, Indian River, Leon, Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach and Sarasota counties.

Since these counties include some of the state’s largest cities — such as Orlando, Miami and Tampa — these mandates translate to 52 percent of Florida students being required to wear masks at school.
