Special counsel Robert Mueller has connected an ex-Trump campaign official to a Russian operative in the weeks leading up to the 2016 presidential election, according to a new report Tuesday night.
Mueller — probing Russian interference in the 2016 race and any potential collusion between Moscow and then-candidate Donald Trump’s team — claimed in court papers that deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates was in touch with someone connected to Russian intelligence in September and October 2016, CNN reported.
The court filing is connected to the sentencing of Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan, who pleaded guilty last month to lying to the special counsel about his interactions with Gates.

So FBI now says Manafort associate Konstantin Kilimnik is assessed to have had ongoing ties to Russian intelligence in 2016. Manafort had extensive contact with Kilimnik, met with him about the campaign and asked him to offer "private briefings" to Oleg Deripaska.
