A communications official at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is set to retire after he was identified by The Daily Beast as the author of blog posts on a conservative website criticizing Anthony Fauci under a pseudonym, a spokesperson for the agency confirmed Monday.
William Crews, a public affairs specialist for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has been writing under the pseudonym “streiff” for years for the right-wing website RedState, according to The Daily Beast. Streiff is listed as the managing editor of the website.
Streiff’s posts criticize Fauci, who leads the NIAID, describing him as a “mask nazi” and deriding him as the “attention-grubbing and media-whoring Anthony Fauci,” according to The Daily Beast.
Asked about the report identifying Crews as the author, NIAID spokeswoman Kathy Stover said the agency “first learned of this issue this morning” and that Crews told the NIAID he plans to retire.
“NIAID first learned of this issue this morning, and Mr. Crews has informed us of his intention to retire. We have no further comments on this as it is a personnel matter,” Stover said in a statement.
Crews has worked at the NIAID as a press officer since 2007, according to his LinkedIn page.
