Rapidly rising COVID-19 cases in Oregon are filling the state’s hospitals to near capacity as the delta variant continues to sweep across the U.S.
“The war has changed,” Levi Cole, an ICU nurse at Providence hospital, told reporters, according to The Guardian. “The enemy has gotten meaner and society as a whole sort of let its guard down.”
New cases in Oregon have risen by 33 percent over the past two weeks while the number of hospitalizations increased by 41 percent, according to data compiled by The New York Times.

Oregon Health and Science University projected that hospitalizations would peak around Labor Day, when the analysis predicts the number of staffed hospital beds statewide will be 400 to 500 beds short of demand.
The surge in cases led Gov. Kate Brown to reintroduce strict measures, including an outdoor mask mandate requiring residents to wear face coverings in public settings regardless of vaccinations status. Brown’s mandate goes into effect Aug. 27.
