The mayor of Philadelphia said he was “upset” on Wednesday, after announcing sweeping COVID-19 restrictions amid an increase in coronavirus cases nationwide.

New mask mandates went into effect in Philadelphia overnight on Thursday as COVID-19 cases spike throughout the country, driven largely by the highly infectious delta variant.

Masks are now required for indoor businesses and institutions that do not insist on all employees and patrons being vaccinated against COVID-19.

For businesses and institutions that do require all workers and customers to be vaccinated, however, face coverings are not mandated.

Similar restrictions are in place for indoor dining. In restaurants that require all occupants to be vaccinated, masks are not mandated, but face coverings are required while not seated and eating or drinking in eateries where vaccines are not needed for entry.

Officials also implemented a new mask mandate for non-seated outdoor events: for such gatherings with more than 1,000 people in attendance, face coverings are required.

The city of Philadelphia cited the threat from the delta variant when announcing the new restrictions.
