Five people were transported out of an Alexandria baseball field where Republican lawmakers were shot at as they were practicing for a congressional charity baseball game, police officials said Wednesday.

Capitol Police and Alexandria police provided few details during a short press conference Wednesday morning.

“It’s a stable situation,” said Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown.

Brown said the police received a call about an active shooter at 7:09 a.m.

“We know five people were transported medically from the scene,” Brown said.

Brown would provide few details, but said his department is working with Capitol Hill Police and the FBI.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the House Majority Whip, was shot in the hip. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, was taken out on a stretcher, but Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, said he was not shot, and hurt himself diving into the dugout.
