Portland public schools ban textbooks that cast doubt on climate change

The Portland Public Schools board voted last week to ban any materials that cast doubt on climate change, thePortland Tribune reported.

According to the resolution passed May 17, the school district must remove any textbooks and other materials that suggest climate change is not occurring or that says human beings are not responsible for it.

“A lot of the text materials are kind of thick with the language of doubt, and obviously the science says otherwise,” said Bill Bigelow, a former Portland public school teacher who worked to present the resolution. Bigelow says textbook publishers are yielding to pressure from fossil fuels companies. “We don’t want kids in Portland learning material courtesy of the fossil fuel industry.”

This goes along with my comment in the School Choice thread. Children in public schools can’t do basic math, but they can recite the talking points on clmate change that are being drummed ino their heads. Parents need to have education options for their children now. Otherwise, the kids are doomed because they will have no marketable skills neessary for a career. There are probably thousands of graduates applying for EBT who can recite liberal talking points.

Perhaps those here do not know how textbooks get chosen.

Texas is responsible for textbooks available for schools in every state. What! You didn’t know that! How could that happen?! Why Texas?!

Follow the money for publishers of textbooks. Which state buys more textbooks than any other state? It is Texas. If Texas doesn’t buy their textbooks, they will lose money. This is how it works:

Texas has a State Board of Education. The members are chosen by elections. In November, the Texas ballot will have the names of those running for the board. Almost every one of them are very conservative Republicans. They travel the state speaking to Republican Parties to gather votes. These people are anti-abortion, seek to keep history books telling the truth, not made up stories of the liberals. Math books are kept to regular math, not made up liberal math. Science books keep to real science, presenting creation by God and also presenting Darwin’s theory. God is not left out.

Now, the board meets and Publishers send their proposed textbook for math, English, history, etc., BEFORE THEY PUBLISH THESE BOOKS. If the Texas Board does not approve their books, the Publishers are sunk, so they give the board the “proposed” textbooks so the board can change parts of the book to make it acceptable. The publisher will change the book to get board approval, THEN THE BOOKS ARE PUBLISHED and those are the textbooks every state gets to choose from at a reasonable price.

Now, a state can add any books they want – it is up to local school boards to buy any other books they want. That means California can buy their gay books, Islam books, whatever.

Be glad Texas is a conservative big state with an education board of text book monitors to keep liberal crap out of textbooks.
