He also directly threatened NATO in that speech.
Not good. https://t.co/akxV3CsJMu

Watching this Putin speech now. I think he just raised the old Soviet bullshit- that Ukraine is developing nuclear weapons.
— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) February 24, 2022This speech from Putin now is shot through with Soviet imagery and phrases. This guy is right out of 1975.

Putin keeps trying to limit himself to "the situation in Donbass" but then he talks about the full demilitarization of Ukraine and the nefarious plans of NATO.
This guy is off his rocker.

The one thing I got right about Putin – watching this speech now – is how much that sorry son of a bitch misses the old USSR.

Oh man, this wrap up with a plea to "esteemed comrades" to think about the Motherland.
The last time I had this kind of unease, Andropov was running things.

Russian television is referring to Putin's diatribe as announcing a "special operation in Donbass" – despite the fact that Putin's speech was pretty much a declaration of war on all of Ukraine and the entire post-Cold War order.
— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) February 24, 2022I haven't felt this kind of feeling in the pit of my stomach since the 1980s.

As a "cold warrior," like @RadioFreeTom, I've spent a lifetime countering false threats and stupidity from Russia…Putin has taken it to a criminal level. My stomach has the same pit. https://t.co/WplHdfLvsK

To recap, Putin thinks the Ukrainians are "Neo-Nazis" because they overthrew his puppit dictator, have a functioning democracy, want to join the European Union, signed the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedom back in 1997, and so on… 😡 pic.twitter.com/VBaax2NwMD

Putin's speech appears to be an official declaration of war. This is not an operation limited to the Donbas, it is a military operation with maximalist war aims, whose aim is regime change. https://t.co/xKtofQSWvg

Amazing how so many of the self-proclaimed American nationalists talk such a big game about the importance of nationalism, the morality of nationalism, the necessity of nationalism, just don't care very much when an imperial power tries to erase a nation.

Russia’s independent Ekho Moskvi Radio (Echo of Moscow) reports that Putin’s speech about the beginning of the “military operation” was recorded on February 21st. He is wearing same tie.
“Confirmed by downloading video from Kremlin web-page and checking metadata” – tweet says. https://t.co/UqPE9VCE8t— Jennifer Griffin (@JenGriffinFNC) February 24, 2022
There's no justification for Putin's brutal, wanton attack on Ukraine now. None. You can cite all the reasons why Moscow has a point here — some might even be valid — but nothing justifies naked aggression against your neighbor. It's time to stand up and be counted, folks.
